All that Glitters is Not A Panda (Fitness Coach Sample)

To: Example Client

Subject: All That Glitters is Not a Panda

If pandas aren’t the first animal that come to mind when you think of athleticism, I wouldn’t blame you. They are clumsy, fat, and adorable (babies, looking at you).

They eat constantly and sleep in between eating. Yet we love them for who they are. Or for what we think they are supposed to be.

A Chinese zoo recently got into some trouble after some sharp-eyed kids noticed that the pandas weren’t as clumsy and fat and… panda-shaped… as they should be. Turns out, the zoo thought they would dye Chow Chows black and white instead of displaying actual pandas.

The zoo, who covered their butts by admitting that they advertised “panda dogs”, still had to deal with children armed with cotton candy and an inability to deal with disappointment.

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick.” - the Bible.

“Hell hath no fury like a Chinese school child scorned.” Confucius, probably

People don’t expect pandas to be athletic, but they don’t expect them to be dogs either.

Changing Your Expectations

Unmet expectations is something the fitness world thrives on.

We know that we are sick and fat. We know we want to leave a healthier legacy for our kids. We

The medical costs of non-panda related obesity in the U.S. is almost $150 billion a year. And yet, health and fitness as an industry is expected to be a $6.73bn industry by 2027. I hope I don’t have to point out the obvious, but that seems a little out of balance.

I help you to bring that back into balance. As a coach, I care about your health. I don’t just care about muscles and strength, but the health of your mind and body.

However, at the end of the day, we’re talking about unmet expectations, so let me be clear.

Your health is a direct result of your own choices.

That’s hard to hear, but it’s the truth. You can’t expect the panda to be a jaguar, and you can’t expect Twinkies to turn into a 6-pack. Stop expecting the couch potato to turn into a Greek god(ess).

Now that that’s out of the way, here’s more truth: you can make better choices.

You really can. I believe that with all of my heart. Every single one of my clients has simply made a few better choices.

Moving just a little bit more? Slightly better choice.

Taking ownership over what you eat? Small choice with big results.

Following a plan? A choice.

The Biggest Small Decision

Someone told me once that our actions are based on the thing that we truly want at that moment. If you want to sleep in, you’ll sleep in. If you want to workout more than you want to sleep, you’ll workout.

Ultimately, a life is not made up of the big dreams we dream, but the daily choices that we make. Being the premiere zoo for panda viewing is a dream. Putting paint on a Chow Chow and advertising “panda dogs” is a choice.

Reading this newsletter is a good decision, but if you expect any change to come from simply reading, we’ve got some work to do.

Action is the only engine for change.

You’ve got to change your actions, not your expectations.

Maybe you’ve had high expectations for your results in the past and have fallen short. You’ve stopped and started more times than you can count. You’ve tried multiple diets, googled endless workout plans, followed every Instagram fitness influencer, and downloaded every health app in the app store.

So what’s missing?

Are you not motivated enough? Maybe, but if that were really true, you wouldn’t keep trying.

Or maybe you don’t have enough information? In the age of the internet? If anything, you have too much information.

Not enough time? Not enough equipment? Valid reasons, but I’ve met some healthy people whose packed days and studio apartments would beg to disagree.

What’s missing is a pathway to follow.

What’s missing is accountability.

What’s missing are clear next steps and realistic expectations.

Some health and fitness coaches are nothing more than zoos who paint dogs black and white. They play on your expectations and then pull the rug out from under you.

The fitness industry deserves better.

Your family deserves better.

You deserve better.

If you want realistic expectations, actionable steps, and an honest partner, I can help.
